Summary
The City is seeking to move from the 2012 to the 2015 Editions of the International Codes, along with updated local amendments. This includes the 2015 International Building, Residential, Existing Building, Energy Conservation, Property Maintenance, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fuel Gas, and Fire Codes. The City is proposing to adopt amendments to the Codes to be consistent with regional and local practices. New Code editions are published every three years, increasing safety and efficiency, and utilizing new technology. On February 2, 2017, the Building and Standards Commission voted unanimously to recommend adoption of the 2015 Codes and amendments. Important changes to the Codes include tornado shelter requirements, changes in required restrooms, span reductions of some common woods, pool safety provisions, new approaches to existing buildings, increased energy efficiency standards, safer refrigerant containment, and decreased lead content in plumbing. Staff recommends adoption of these 2015 International Codes and amendments in order to promote safety and development in our community.
